Commissioner Jason Hester
Major Jason Hester was born and raised in Big Lake, Texas and graduated from Howard College in Big Spring Texas with his A. S. degree in Criminal Justice. He returned to college and completed his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Tarleton State University in 2012 and his Master’s degree from Tarleton in 2014. Major Hester started his law enforcement career working for the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department and graduated from the Concho Valley Law Enforcement Academy in 1997. He began his career with the Texas Department of Public Safety that same year and upon graduation from the DPS Law Enforcement Academy, was stationed in Big Spring. Major Hester promoted to Highway Patrol Sergeant in 2003 and remained in Big Spring.
While stationed in Big Spring, he worked with numerous local organizations such as Victim Services, Big Spring Little League, and served on the board of directors of the Emergency Services Chaplain Corps and was an instructor for Howard College’s Criminal Justice Program, and for the Permian Basin Law Enforcement Academy in the region. He was promoted to Highway Patrol Lieutenant in 2008 and was stationed first in Del Rio and then transferred to San Angelo where he supervised Highway Patrol, Border and Emergency Management operations.
He was promoted to Captain in March of 2010 as Captain of Law Enforcement Education and Recruiting overseeing the hiring and training of all Troopers for the Texas Department of Public Safety and oversees the DPS Law Enforcement Academy. In 2012 Major Hester was selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA and graduated session 251. He was promoted to Major in August 2013 and oversaw the Education, Training and Research Division for the Department of Public Safety. In August of 2016 he transferred back to the Texas Highway Patrol Division where he currently serves in Austin.
Major Hester is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates of Texas and currently serves on the board of directors as the San Antonio region representative. He is also a member of the Texas Police Association, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, Texas DPS Officers Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Major Hester has taught numerous subjects including use of force, firearms, driving, crash reconstruction, DPS Leadership and Command courses, and is an instructor for John Maxwell’s 360 Leader and 5 Levels of Leadership. Major Hester has earned his Master Peace Officer and Advanced Instructor license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He is married to his wife Denise and they have 3 boys and live in Lago Vista.
