Commissioner Janna Atkins
Janna Atkins started her law enforcement career with the Abilene Police Department in 1985. She worked as a patrol officer for 13 years. She was promoted to the Abilene police academy in 1998 as an academy trainer and instructor. Ms. Atkins left the Abilene Police Department in 2001 and began employment as police trainer for the West Central Texas Regional Law Enforcement Academy (WCTLEA).
She has been the WCTLEA Criminal Justice Specialist since 2005. She was promoted to Criminal Justice Manger/Training Coordinator and not only manages but instructs in the licensing and training courses of the WCTLEA. She has extensive academy experience in training peace officers, jailers, telecommunicators and the current School Marshal program.
Ms. Atkins holds a Master Peace Officer certificate, Advanced Peace Officer Instructor Proficiency certificate, Firearms instructor Proficiency certificate, as well as being a certified Sexual Assault and Family Violence Investigator instructor. She has over 30 years’ experience as a Texas peace officer and trainer.
Ms. Atkins is married to Lt. David Atkins with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office and they have two children and two grandchildren.
